End of an Era

“End of an Era” is a unique, hand-made sculpture commissioned specifically as a gift from Headquarters Number 2 Group to Air Chief Marshall Sir Simon Bryant KCB CBE, on the occasion of his retirement from the Royal Air Force.  The title was chosen as a reflection of both Air Chief Marshal Bryant’s retirement, and the cessation of the position of Commander-in-Chief.

The sculpture stands approximately 24” tall, and has a wingspan of 18”.  It is produced throughout from recycled or re-purposed steel from a wide range of sources, which has been hand-cut and welded to produce a stylized Spitfire.  Of particularly note, the stand was cut and crafted from a turret mount reclaimed from an Avro Lancaster crash site, hence some of the dents and the pitted patina.  The finished sculpture is Nickel plated to give a striking silver glow, and is mounted to a pedestal made from Welsh slate, engraved with the title and inlaid in silver before being polished.
